Likoni Member of Parliament Mishi Mboko has called for calm and restraint after reports that some Burundian nationals sought refuge in a church in Likoni following alleged threats from some local residents.

Mboko expressed concern over the incident, urging residents to avoid actions that could create tension or threaten the safety of people living in the area.

“I have received with sadness reports that some Burundian nationals have been forced to seek refuge in a church here in Likoni after reportedly being threatened by some local residents,” Mboko said.

The MP said matters relating to immigration and work permits should be handled by the government and relevant authorities, rather than through intimidation or confrontation.

“The government has the mandate to manage immigration matters and ensure that everyone working in the country complies with the law and has the necessary documentation,” she said.

Mboko also urged Burundian nationals and other foreigners whose documentation may not be in order to use the time provided by the government to regularise their permits and comply with directions from the relevant authorities.

At the same time, she cautioned residents against discrimination, threats or actions that could make foreigners feel unsafe because of their nationality or immigration status.

“Differences in nationality or the status of permits should never be a reason for threats, discrimination or for anyone to feel unsafe,” Mboko said.

She noted that Likoni is home to people from diverse communities and backgrounds, making peaceful coexistence an important responsibility for everyone.

“Likoni is home to people from different communities and countries, and maintaining our peace is a responsibility we all share,” she added.

The MP called on residents to work closely with security agencies and local leaders to prevent the situation from escalating into panic or disrupting peace in the community.

“Likoni has been built by people from different communities. Let us protect our peace,” Mboko said.
