Human rights defenders and gender equality advocates have called on the government to intensify efforts to end the rising cases of femicide in the country.

Speaking during a femicide exhibition held in Mombasa, activists decried the alarming number of women being brutally killed, saying urgent policy action and stronger law enforcement are needed to protect women and girls.

The exhibition, dubbed “Maskani”, has so far been held in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Nakuru, before making its way to Mombasa.

The moving showcase features portraits and personal stories of femicide victims, aiming to humanize statistics and spark meaningful public dialogue on gender-based violence.

Organizers said the event was not only a memorial for victims but also a platform to demand accountability and justice for families who continue to suffer in silence.

Multidisciplinary artist Thayu Kilili, who co-curated the Maskani exhibition, said the name was inspired by the fact that most femicide cases occur within homes and family settings.

“We chose the name ‘Maskani’ because it represents the domestic spaces where people should feel safest, yet tragically, many women are losing their lives there,” Kilili explained.

Adding that the exhibition seeks to turn these painful stories into a national conversation that pushes for prevention and justice.

Steve Colins from The Creative Garage expressed concern over the growing normalization of violence against women, citing disturbing conversations from the public.

“One man openly said he would kill his girlfriend if he sent her fare and she didn’t show up that tells you how deeply rooted the problem is,” Colins said.

He criticized the government for doing “very little” despite forming a task force and allocating funds to tackle the crisis.

“We need more than token gestures; the government must strengthen the gender department, invest in public education, and commit more resources if we are serious about ending femicide,” he added.

Njeri Migwe, the Executive Director of Usikimye, described femicide as a national crisis that demands immediate action.

“Between January and March alone, we were losing one to two women every day to femicide but sadly, this number has now grown. We are currently losing between two and three women daily,” Migwe revealed.

She noted that the exhibition uses powerful images to amplify the message.

“A photograph speaks louder than words, and that is why we chose to advocate through this visual platform to make the pain visible and impossible to ignore,” she said.

Migwe further highlighted that cultural and religious practices in some regions, including Mombasa, often hinder justice for victims. “In many cases, once a woman is killed, she is buried the same day, making it difficult to pursue investigations or obtain justice. We must confront these barriers if we truly want to protect women and end this cycle of silence,” she emphasized.

According to gender rights groups, more than 100 women have been killed in gender-related attacks this year alone, with many cases going unresolved. They attributed the rise to a culture of impunity, weak investigations, and societal attitudes that normalize violence against women. Participants at the event urged both the national and county governments to strengthen support systems for survivors, enhance public awareness, and ensure that perpetrators face the full force of the law.

TECNO, a global AI-driven innovative technology brand who recently celebrated a remarkable achievement at IFA 2025, has announced the release of the TECNO SPARK Slim in Kenya, the thinnest curved-screen smartphone in the world, with a mere 5.93mm in thickness.

To ensure overall durability, SPARK Slim defies traditional trade-offs by combining an ultra-slim design that passes military sector certification with a huge 5160mAh battery.

The SPARK Slim will retail at Ksh 27,999 exclusive of VAT. Maintaining the SPARK series' youthful, colorful, and fashionable DNA, the device's lightweight body and sophisticated 3D-curved profile provide a comfortable in-hand feel, while its aerospace-grade fiberglass rear cover makes it stronger but thinner.

Vibrant color selections further emphasize uniqueness, and the expressive Mood Light design adds an interactive, playful element that speaks to youthful imagination.

By combining substance, style, and slimness, SPARK Slim offers a high-end experience that goes above and beyond what is expected in its price range.

Redefining the Harmony between Ultra-Thin Design and Durable Performance: Sleek Yet Strong At only 5.93mm, the TECNO SPARK Slim makes its debut as the smallest curved-screen smartphone in the world.

TECNO's innovative honeycomb space stacking technique, which maximizes 12% of internal space and makes it possible to reduce down eight essential components—from the motherboard to the battery and cooling system— while keeping the device thin overall, is responsible for this accomplishment.

The 5160mAh high-density lithium cobalt oxide battery that powers the SPARK Slim provides up to 24.8 hours of Day of Use (DOU) despite its incredibly thin design.

Additionally, it allows bypass charging, 10W reverse charging, and 45W rapid charging. This innovative battery solution demonstrates that being thin does not equate to having poor endurance because it resists swelling even after extended use.

A 0.3mm ultra-thin vapor chamber and a high-conductivity graphite layer with a thermal performance of 1800W/m•K are integrated into SPARK Slim to create a 24,532mm² cooling system that ensures continuous performance even under demanding conditions.

This keeps the gadget cool in its incredibly thin shell while enabling steady charging and gaming performance.

The new MediaTek Helio G200 chipset in SPARK Slim builds upon this solid base of power and thermal stability.

With a design that strikes a mix between performance and efficiency, it guarantees seamless daily use and has TÜV-certified fluency for up to five years, providing consumers with long-term stability and assurance in their gadget.

Compact yet Sturdy:

Dependability supported by Military-Grade Standards, the TECNO SPARK Slim maintains durability without sacrificing exceptional thinness.

Its 0.36mm aerospace-grade fiberglass back cover is 200% more flexible and 300% stronger than traditional materials, yet being 0.19mm thinner. Corning® Gorilla® Glass 7i protects the screen, and the gadget is IP64 rated against water and dust, so you can use it with confidence every day.

Slender Yet Chic:

Embracing Personal Expression Slim White and Cool Black are two classic hues of SPARK Slim that infuse classic elegance into contemporary fashion trends.

With its ultra-narrow frame and elegant curves, the device weighs just 156g and has a wonderful slender grip that feels elegant and comfortable in the hand.

Aside from its incredibly thin appearance, SPARK Slim has an interactive Mood  Light design on the back with two circular "eyes" that use multi-scene lighting effects to simulate emotions.

In situations like turning on and off the power, charging, receiving calls, activating Ella, and receiving notifications, the eyes exhibit amusing light animations that convey emotions like happiness, discontent, or blinking.

This makes the device a fashionable daily companion and a means of showcasing personality for Gen Z users, transforming useful notifications into a distinctive form of fashionable self-expression. In addition to providing entertaining interaction, SPARK Slim offers a remarkable visual experience.

With a maximum brightness of 4500 nits and a refresh rate of 144 Hz for incredibly smooth responsiveness, its 1.5K highresolution curved display provides immersive clarity and vibrant visuals even in bright outdoor settings.

Superior Experiences with TECNO AI and Other Technologies

By integrating TECNO AI, SPARK Slim empowers young people in their study, work, and creative output by offering real-time translation, document summary, and AI photo correction.

With the addition of Touch Transfer, customers may effortlessly link two TECNO devices by simply tapping them together to share data, films, or photographs. The tablet offers enhanced entertainment and productivity with dual system support and Dolby dual stereo speakers, further augmenting the experience.

A crucial feature in remote or offline settings, the gadget also boasts TECNO's best-in-class "FreeLink" technology, which allows two-way talks and direct Bluetooth-based messaging even in the absence of cellular coverage.

With the introduction of SPARK Slim, TECNO demonstrates once more that power and slimness can coexist. With its 5.93mm shell, SPARK Slim is the thinnest curved-screen smartphone in the world.

It not only pushes the limits of revolutionary technical power, but it also offers ultra-slim experiences that are unparalleled in terms of performance and endurance. It offers users who do not want to be defined and who wish to express themselves at any time a useful, fashionable, and user-friendly ultra-slim experience.

The TECNO SPARK Slim is available at all TECNO Mobile Kenya brand stores and e-commerce platforms.

Detectives in Nyali, Mombasa, have arrested a woman who staged a robbery against her British boyfriend, after luring him to her apartment for what was supposed to be a "dream date".

According to a statement from the Directorate of criminal investigations (DCI) the suspect, Samira Mumbi Kiarie, aka Samira, had been wooing the Briton for months on the net, charming him with promises of everlasting love.

Blinded by affection, the man packed his confidence and visited her posh apartment in Nyali, oblivious that he was walking into a scripted heist.

"Barely minutes into the rendezvous, the door burst open. Two men stormed in, one claiming to be Samira's furious husband; the other flashing a fake police ID." reads the statement from DCI.

The "husband" accused the Brit of wrecking his home, as the fake cop threatened arrest.

The terrified foreigner was then coerced into transferring a cool Sh800,000 to mobile phone numbers provided by the gang.

Once the cash landed, the trio calmly escorted their victim out before vanishing into Mombasa's humid night like ghosts after payday.

But the honeymoon didn't last. Acting on forensic intelligence, detectives launched a stealth pursuit, arresting Samira and one of her accomplices, Paul Webster Mangeni, aka Paulo.

Investigations have since established that the two are part of a notorious syndicate that lures foreigners through dating sites, sets them up in Airbnbs, and robbing them of their hard-earned money.

Both suspects are in police custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment, as the hunt intensifies for their partner-in-crime, who is still at large.

Hundreds of journalists from Mombasa County took to the streets on Monday to commemorate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, sending out a powerful message to end all forms of violence and impunity against journalists.

The procession, which started at Uhuru Gardens and culminated at the Little Theatre, was marked by chants, banners, and speeches calling for justice and protection for journalists.

The invited speakers among them veteran journalists, human rights activists and Mombasa senator agitated for a safer, freer environment for media practitioners

The event, held under police authorization, drew participation from several human rights organizations, including Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI), Haki Yetu, and Human Rights Agenda (HURIA), among others.

One of the key issues highlighted during the commemoration was Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV), which has become an emerging threat against journalists especially women in the media.

Brenda Dosio, Coast Regional Coordinator for the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), emphasized that women journalists are disproportionately targeted through online harassment and cyberbullying, which threatens not only their safety but also press freedom.

“We must stand against technology-facilitated gender-based violence targeting female journalists. They are among the most exposed due to the advancement of technology. Journalists must not sit quietly they should speak up and report these violations. A threat to media is a threat to democracy,”said Dosio.

Dosio urged journalists to collaborate with human rights organizations in documenting and reporting cases so that perpetrators can be brought to justice.

Ending Impunity to Protect Democracy
Haki Yetu representative Munira Ali reiterated the importance of addressing impunity, saying that ending TFGBV and other crimes against journalists will strengthen democracy.

“These crimes have a chilling effect on press freedom and undermine the ability of journalists to hold those in power accountable,” said Ali.

Mombasa Press Club Chairman Omar Abdallah echoed the call, urging authorities to fully enforce existing laws that protect journalists and media institutions.

“We are calling on the government to ensure that those who violate media freedom are prosecuted according to the law,” said Abdallah. “Kenya has made strides in passing laws that protect journalists, but implementation remains the biggest challenge,"Abdallah  said.

The commemoration also saw the participation of Mombasa Lands CEC Mohamed Hussein and Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki, both of whom pledged continued support for press freedom.

“We have laws that protect the rights of journalists. What we are asking is for these laws to be respected and enforced,” said Hussein.

Veteran journalists including Elkana Jacob, Charles Mghenyi, and Abdulswamad Ali also joined the event, encouraging unity among journalists and urging them to uphold integrity in their reporting.

“Today we stand together to speak in one voice. When united, we can overcome the challenges facing our profession,” said Mghenyi.

Elkana Jacob, a parliamentary aspirant for Nyali Constituency, called on journalists to use their influence to promote good leadership and positive societal change.

“Journalists shape public opinion. Let’s use our platforms to tell positive stories and drive transformation,” he said.

Abdulswamad Ali reminded journalists of their duty as truth-tellers and defenders of democracy.

“A journalist is a guardian of truth. You must remain ethical, objective, and fearless in holding leaders accountable,” said Ali.

Human Rights Groups Pledge Support
Eddy Otieno, Communications Officer at Human Rights Agenda (HURIA), reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to standing in solidarity with the media fraternity.

“We will continue to support journalists in telling stories that drive social change while advocating for their safety and rights,” said Otieno, speaking on behalf of HURIA Executive Director Yusuf Lule.

Kenya has several laws safeguarding press freedom, including the Constitution of Kenya (2010) Article 34 guarantees freedom of the media.

The Kenya Information and Communication Act (1998) Regulates broadcasting and communication.

Others are the Media Council Act (2013) Establishes the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) to promote media freedom and self-regulation and then the Access to Information Act (2016) Ensures citizens’ right to access public information.

Despite these protections, journalists in Kenya continue to face physical attacks, intimidation, online harassment, and censorship.

The Media Council of Kenya’s Coast representative, Ben Serem, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to promoting a safe and conducive working environment for journalists.

“We will continue to champion media freedoms and ensure journalists practice in a secure and supportive environment,” said Serem.

A Call for Solidarity and Action
The event concluded with a strong message — the fight against crimes targeting journalists, especially TFGBV, requires collective action from all sectors of society.

As the chants of “A threat to media is a threat to democracy” echoed through the streets of Mombasa, the message was clear: journalists must be protected, respected, and empowered to tell the truth without fear.

Senator Hamida Kibwana has sought clarity regarding the government's new mandatory food labeling regulations.

The legislator emphasized that this is a matter of national concern since it is directly related to Kenya’s efforts to tackle the increasing rates of obesity and other diet-related diseases.

As a nation committed to the WHO Global Action Plan on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), the Ministry of Health, working through the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), has introduced these significant new rules.

These regulations will require packaged foods to display clear nutritional information, specifically highlighting high levels of sugar, salt, and fat.

Furthermore, products containing harmful levels of these ingredients must carry front-of-pack warnings, a measure designed to help consumers, particularly children and youth in urban areas, make healthier choices.

While seeking a Statement from the Committee on Health on the floor of the House this afternoon, Senator Kibwana urged the Ministry of Health and the Committee to provide clarity on the strategies that the Kenya Bureau of Standards has put in place to ensure full compliance with the new regulations by all manufacturers and retailers.

She tasked the Senator Jackson Mandago-led Committee to explain to the Senate the plans that the Ministry of Health has put in place to effectively educate the public on how to interpret and properly use the new nutritional labels.

"The Health Committee must also tell this House the enforcement mechanisms that the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has established to address and prevent the use of misleading or non-compliant labels," Senator Hamida submitted.

Senator Hamida urged the Govenment to improve the affordability and access to healthy food options, a necessary step, especially for low-income households.

The Health Committee will, subsequently, invite the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale, to elucidate on the matter afterwhich it will table a Report on the floor of the Senate.
